ABEOKUTA – In a major political realignment that may significantly alter the opposition landscape in Ogun State, over 50 prominent leaders drawn from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Allied People’s Movement (APM), and the core Sikirullahi Ogundele-led PDP structure have officially decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The strategic consultation meeting, held at New Gate Hotel, Agbeloba, Abeokuta, brought together high-ranking political figures from across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state. The gathering was convened to review past political alliances and chart a new direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Notably, the decampees include former APM members who had initially joined the PDP after their 2019 governorship candidate, Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade (popularly known as Triple A), lost to Prince Dapo Abiodun. Akinlade later became the running mate to Hon. Ladi Adebutu under the PDP in the 2023 gubernatorial election. Despite their combined efforts, Governor Dapo Abiodun emerged victorious, securing a second term in office.
Following a period of internal consultations and growing dissatisfaction within the PDP, especially among grassroots stakeholders, the leaders have now made a decisive move to return to the APC, a development seen as a major boost to the ruling party’s strength and structure in Ogun State.
Insiders described the atmosphere at the meeting as one of renewed hope and strategic unity, as former PDP loyalists re-embraced the APC fold with the aim of supporting the developmental strides of Governor Abiodun and contributing to a stronger, more inclusive political structure going forward.
This wave of defections signals a potential weakening of the PDP in Ogun State and a reinforcement of the APC’s dominance, especially at the grassroots level. With this realignment, political observers believe the APC is consolidating its base ahead of future elections, as more key actors rally behind the governor’s leadership and performance-driven governance.
