The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) has conferred an Honorary Fellowship Award on Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to national development, industrial growth, and his unwavering advocacy for innovation and technological advancement in Nigeria.
The honour was bestowed on Thursday night, during the 38th International Conference, Exhibition and Annual General Meeting of the Institution, held under the theme “Promoting Sustainable Economy Through Technological Advancement – The Mechanical Engineering Perspective.”
The high-profile event brought together engineers, policymakers, academics and industrial leaders from across the nation.
In his goodwill message, Otunba Ashiru extolled the engineering profession as the heartbeat of modern civilization, describing engineers as “the engine room of the world.” He said, “Every Nigerian, indeed every human being, is an engineer. Because without the engineers, without your intervention, nothing can move. Even this building where we are gathered would not stand without the ingenuity of engineers.”
He urged members of the Institution to recognize their self-worth and the indispensable role they play in shaping societies, adding, “You must know your values. You are the real engine room anywhere in the world. When you travel abroad and see the marvels of engineering, the rail systems, the roads, the infrastructure, you realize how vital your profession is to human progress.”
The award ceremony also featured technical paper presentations, exhibitions of emerging technologies, and the induction of new Fellows. Participants described the event as a celebration of excellence, innovation, and the enduring partnership between engineering and economic sustainability.
