Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, a growing number of public facilities across Nigeria have been renamed in his honour—sparking national discourse over the motivations and symbolism behind the move. From major roads to airports, barracks, and national institutions, at least seven prominent sites now bear the president’s name, two years into his administration.
This trend has drawn both admiration and criticism. While proponents view it as recognition of leadership and reform efforts, critics, including the Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development (NEFGAD), have condemned it as premature and inappropriate. The advocacy group described the renamings as “extreme sycophancy” and “ethically questionable,” especially as they involve a sitting president.
Here are seven notable landmarks and institutions that have been renamed after President Tinubu:
1. Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna
On March 10, 2024, Governor Umar Bago of Niger State announced the renaming of Minna’s airport—originally dedicated to renowned Hausa writer and journalist, Abubakar Imam. The change, according to the state government, was to acknowledge President Tinubu’s support for Niger State. This followed the federal directive in 2023 authorizing the renaming of 15 airports after notable Nigerians.
2. Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, Abuja
On May 28, 2024, the Southern Parkway in Abuja was officially named after Tinubu by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The major thoroughfare, stretching from the Christian Centre to Ring Road One, complements the Northern Parkway, known as Sani Abacha Road, and serves as one of the capital’s key arteries.
3. Bola Tinubu Building, National Assembly
The National Assembly library, constructed during the 9th Assembly and nearly completed before its conclusion in June 2023, was renamed the Bola Tinubu Building upon its completion by the 10th Assembly. It was officially inaugurated on May 29, 2024, with the president himself in attendance.
4. Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC)
On December 10, 2024, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) renamed its Command and Control Centre to Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC). Described by NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nanna Nandap as a cutting-edge facility, BATTIC aims to bolster border security, migration management, and national surveillance systems.
5. Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic, Gwarinpa
In January 2025, the Federal Government approved the establishment of a new polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Abuja, bearing the president’s name. The institution is expected to drive innovation through vocational, technological, and entrepreneurial training, in line with Nigeria’s educational development agenda.
6. Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, Asokoro
On January 23, 2025, a newly constructed military housing estate in Asokoro, Abuja, was named after President Tinubu. The complex features 16 residences for major-generals, 34 for brigadier-generals, and dozens more for lower-ranking officers. It also includes religious centres, recreational facilities, and a powerhouse. Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, stated that the naming was “to give honour to whom honour is due.”
7. Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja
The Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC), originally built in 1991 during General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime, was renamed Tinubu International Conference Centre on June 10, 2025, following renovations overseen by Minister Wike. The AICC remains a central venue for high-level events, including international conferences, trade fairs, and official government functions. Additionally, various halls within the centre were renamed after key national figures, such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
