Abeokuta, July 22, 2025 – The Ogun State chapter of Organized Labour has suspended its week-long industrial strike following a temporary agreement reached with the State Government. The decision was announced on Tuesday through a joint press statement issued by leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
According to the statement, the suspension of the strike followed the signing of a Memorandum of Action (MoA), which labour leaders described as a demonstration of commitment on the part of the government. The unions stated that the suspension takes effect immediately to allow time for the implementation of agreed actions as contained in the MoA. However, they maintained that while the strike is on hold, the struggle for improved welfare and working conditions is far from over.
Labour leaders acknowledged that the resolution of the crisis was made possible through the intervention of eminent personalities, including paramount rulers, national labour leaders, and seasoned veterans of the labour movement both within and outside the country. They lauded the mediators for their wisdom, commitment, and constructive engagement which helped to pave the way for meaningful dialogue with the government.
They also noted that engagement with the state government had become more productive and sincere, with stakeholders contributing meaningfully to the discussions and advocating strongly for the interest of workers. Labour stated that the collective input of these stakeholders shaped the progress recorded and formed the basis of the temporary understanding reached.
Security concerns were also cited as part of the reasons for suspending the strike. According to the unions, intelligence reports were not favourable for continued mass gatherings, adding that the safety of workers is paramount and must not be compromised.
While commending the workers for their unity and perseverance, the unions praised their doggedness and unwavering solidarity throughout the strike. They assured workers that no one in the Civil or Public Service, including those in the Local Government system, will be victimised for participating in the action.
The statement was jointly signed by Comrade Hameed-Benco Ademola, Chairman of the NLC; Comrade Olasisi Akeem, Chairman of the TUC; and Comrade Olude Isa, Chairman of the JNC, along with their respective secretaries: Comrade Omoneh Chris (NLC), Comrade Oloyede Olayemi (JNC), and Comrade Adebiyi Olusegun (TUC).
The unions concluded by reaffirming their commitment to the welfare of workers, declaring: “Solidarity forever! Workers united can never be defeated.”
